In-Clinic Medicine Sessions
A ketamine medicine session typically involves receiving ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic drug, in a controlled medical setting for therapeutic purposes. Ketamine has been studied and used off-label for its potential therapeutic effects on various mental health conditions, such as treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD and chronic pain. Here’s what you can expect during a ketamine medicine session at IIT:
Medical evaluation: Prior to the session, you will undergo a thorough medical evaluation to assess your overall health and determine if you are a suitable candidate for ketamine therapy. This will involve reviewing your medical history, discussing any medications you are currently taking, and checking vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels. This is also an opportunity to get to know our physicians and answer all your questions.
Setting: Ketamine medicine sessions at IIT are conducted in our private and comfortable therapeutic healing spaces. The setting is designed to be soothing and calming, with features such as dim lighting, comfortable seating, and relaxing music.
Administration of ketamine: Ketamine can be administered via several routes, including intramuscular (IM) injection, or sub- lingual lozenges. The specific method of administration will depend on clinical recommendation based on your individual needs and medical history. The dosage will be carefully calculated based on your weight and other factors.
Monitoring: During the ketamine session, you will be monitored closely by one of IIT’s trained therapists who will be seated by you throughout your journey. Additionally, our physicians will regularly be at your side to ensure your safety and well-being throughout the session.
Experience during the session: Ketamine is known for inducing altered states of consciousness, and your experience during a ketamine session can vary. You may feel a sense of dissociation from your body or surroundings, changes in perception, and/or an altered sense of time. Some people report experiencing vivid and dream-like imagery or having introspective insights. The experience can be different for each individual and can induce profound and lasting changes.
Duration: Ketamine medicine sessions typically last for 60-90 minutes, with additional time for preparation and recovery.
Aftercare: After the ketamine session, you may be monitored for a short period of time to ensure you are stable and safe to leave the medical facility. You will also receive post-session support to help process and integrate your experience.
